We’ve been very fortunate with our winter this year!  Days like today, March 9th (high of 20 degrees Celsius) is a prime opportunity to get out in the garden and prune.  If you are not sure how, give us a call!  We can even do some of it for you…you just do the clean up after us!

Do you have Holly, Dogwood or other evergreens in your landscape?  This is when I would prune these plants.  I use all of these to embellish my front entrance or dining room table.  Why not make your cast off prunings have a second function before discarding them?  I make centre pieces with stems of Dogwood with their bright red twigs, Juniper branches, Holly and a couple ornaments to top it off.  Consider adding these plants to your landscape in the spring.

Make sure you clean up all your leaves in the fall. They are much more difficult to clean up in the spring and when left on your grass over winter, will not only look unsightly, but will like kill your grass. Also, be sure to blow leaves out of your stone areas and other landscape areas covered with various aggregates as riverstone or crushed brick. If left there for an extended period, they will not only discolour the aggregates but will break down and provide a media source for weeds to thrive.

Save yourself a ton of work, do as I do. blow all the leaves out of your landscape and onto the grass, get your mower out, take off the bagger, close the flap so the leaves can’t shoot out, and mulch away! You can then rake up areas with excessive debris left behind and the rest is fine!
